Fine Motor Skills

Motor skills are movements and actions that involve muscles. Broadly, there are two types of motor skills

  1. Gross Motor Skills and
  2.  Fine motor skills.

Gross motor skills require movement and coordination of the arms, legs, and other large body parts and its motion. It includes activities such as running, crawling, jumping etc.

Fine motor skills require smaller movements that occur in the wrists, hands, fingers, and the feet and toes. These are required for smaller actions such as picking up objects between the thumb and finger, writing carefully and even tying shoelaces.  Weaknesses in fine motor skills can affect a child’s ability to eat, write legibly, use a computer, turn pages in a book and perform personal care tasks such as dressing. These two motor skills are very important for overall development of a child.

As a parent, we can do a lot of activities with or kids to help them develop these fine motor skills. Click on links below for an elaborate description of each activity.
